Africa ATV Tour FAQ

South Africa Wild Coast Tour

1. How much money will I need?

The local currency is the Rand. Your only expenses will be souvenirs and your bar bill. The exchange rate is about 6 Rand to the dollar. Exchange $100 US if you don't drink a lot and maybe $200 if you do. The hotel will take credit cards for your tab, so cash is needed only for incidentals. Don't exchange too much. It is a hassle to exchange it at the airport. You have to go get your boarding card and then go back to the banks on the second level. Plan on spending all the Rands you exchange.

2.What documents  do we need to bring?

You must bring your passport (which must have more than 6 month to expiration). You should bring a drivers license. We will arrange any visas.

3. What about shots?

Visit your doctor. There are a suite of standard shots recommended for all travelers. If you are sensitive, ask for a prescription for antibiotics to treat diarrhea. Some travelers take anti-malarial drugs. Some tours do enter areas that have malaria.

4. What is included in the  Tour Price?

Transfer to and from the airport. Lodging each tour night including the night before the tour starts. All meals and ATV fuel. Only your bar bill is not included. Note that bottled water is considered part of your bar bill.

5. What kind of lodging is provided?

This varies by tour. See the resort pictures. Some tours have tent camps.

6. Do I share a room?

Double occupancy is standard. You must pay a single supplement for a single room. All tents are double occupancy.

7. What riding equipment must I bring?

You must bring a helmet, googles and gloves. Over the ankle boots are required. We recommend riding pants and jerseys. Body armor is great protection against the thorns. (So is not riding through them.) A lightweight rain jacket is good insurance against an unexpected thunderstorm.

8. What other clothing do I need to bring?

Resort shoes, shorts, shirt with a collar (polo etc). Dinner is formal, but you don't have to dress. A light jacket is a good idea.

9. What food and drink can I expect?

South Africans are hearty diners. All meals include meat and starches. Mutton, pork and beef are frequent menu items. Fruit, yogurt and cereal all are available at breakfast. In the resort you order your dinner drinks from the bar.

10. What about alcohol?

Drinking while riding is not allowed. You are expected to be sober when you show up to ride each morning. Alcohol is fairly inexpensive by American standards.

11. What about any Breakage?

You are responsible for any damage you cause to your ATV. You are expected to know how to ride or to ask for assistance if you are unsure you can safely navigate a trail hazzard. AAT will hold a copy of your credit card number to charge any damages.

12. What ATV will we ride?

We provide Polaris 500 sportman's for all our tours/

13. Who are our Tour Guides?

This will depend on the tour you select. Johann will lead most tours. Peter assists on the Transkei as he is the tour permit holder.

14. What kind of animals will we see?

This will depend on the tour. In any case, we will visit several game parks to allow you to get those animal photos for your album.

15. When is the best time to visit South Africa?

Our tours are all in the Spring, Summer or Fall. Winter is the least predictable weather for atv touring, so we skip it.

16. Which airlines will we be using?

You arrange your own transportation to Johannesburg. (JHB) South African, TWA, KLM all have great US connections.

17. How do you accommodate non-riding spouses and/or kids?

We have limited non-riding seating available on the tour. We do not recommend children under 12 as we cannot be responsible for supervision. Spouses can stay with the camping crew or in the resort for most riding days.

19. What other activities can be accomplished?

If you wish to arrive early for a tour or stay after, many activities  can be arranged. Golfing , scuba diving, shark watching, the list is endless. Give us a call and lets discuss it.

20. What about getting injured?

First rate medical care is available in South Africa. Helicopter ambulance service is available. We recommend  you purchase  trip medical insurance .

21. What other items should I bring?

Movie cameras, still cameras. Remember you will be riding so you will need good cases to transport them. See our list of what to bring.
